All of you beware of online banking malware “EventBot“. This Android malware is stealing the data of the users from financial applications. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) warns the users.

Mobile Banking Malware “EventBot” Steals Users Data, CERT-In warns

This mobile banking malware abuses Android’s in-built accessibility feature. Then it steals the user data, read the SMS messages, and block SMS messages which allow the malware to bypass two-factor authentication.

The malware EventBot targets more than 200 different financial apps like banking apps, money-transfer services, and cryptocurrency wallets which are based in Europe and US region. However, some of the services might affect Indian users also.



EventBot mostly targeting financial apps like PayPal Business, Revolut, Barclays, UniCredit, CapitalOne UK, HSBC UK, TransferWise, Coinbase, Paysafecard etc.

EventBot target your device through the third-party app downloading site to get to the victim device.

Once installed on victim’s Android device, it asks permissions such as controlling system alerts, reading external storage content, installing additional packages, accessing Internet, whitelisting it to ignore battery optimisation, prevent processor from sleeping or dimming the screen, auto-initiate upon reboot, receive and read SMS messages, and continue running and accessing data in the background,”



Moreover, the malware advises the users to give access to the device accessibility services.

Also, it can retrieve notifications about other installed applications and read contents of other applications. Over the time, it can also read Lock Screen and in-app PIN that can give attacker more privileged access over victim device.

The cybersecurity agency recommended the users to prevent malware infection to their phones. They gave advise no to download and install apps from untrusted sources via unknown websites/links.

India Tells Banks to Migrate ATMs From Windows XP.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has notified all local financial institutions to exchange the operating system of the ATMs that still run Windows XP. They will be subject to regulatory sanctions if they do not meet the deadline – by June 2019. The Bleeping Computer obtained a copy of the notification sent by the RBI. Banks will have to implement some security measures before replacing Windows XP with another newer system. In the first phase, which lasts until August 2018, banks should implement password in the BIOS of ATMs; disable USB ports; apply the latest security patches, and limit the access time of administrators. In the second phase, which runs until March 2019, institutions will have to take steps to prevent card cloning and will apply whitelisting to release critical access only to certain users. Whatsapp can start showing ads soon. As per the reports, it is said that Whatsapp’s parent company Facebook has decided not to put ads on the app. Whatsapp has billions of users around the world. Facebook has not planned completely to show advertisements on Whatsapp. The networking giant suspended the push to bring ads to avoid “antagonising regulators.” As per the reports mentioned, how the advertising model will be performed is the Facebook can use the phone numbers as determines to “match” Whatsapp and Facebook accounts and then it will show ads to the targeted users.
